Demoforce were given the task to demolish the 1960s pedestrian bridge at the Victoria Quarter redevelopment in Barnet.
The pedestrian bridge was 130 meters in length, spanning from the under croft from the Network rail main line, over the entrance to the Cadent Gas yard and finishing up in the adjacent public park.
The Bridge demolition had a number of high-risk activities. The cadent Gas yard entrance had to remain operational 24/7 during the demolition works and the element of the works adjacent to the Network rail elevation had to be considered. There was also a number of live services underneath the bridge which was protected before the works could commence. The bridge demolition was split into 3 sections, the first section of bridge was demolished with our Cat 340 High reach excavator. This allowed Demoforce to install a temporary road for the Cadent Gas yard. Demoforce then dismantled section 2 over the Cadent Gas yard entrance and adjacent to the main gas feed to the gas works. Section 2 had to be dismantled due to the location of the bridge. The dismantling process sequence was to demolish the pre-cast plank floor of the bridge with a Brokk 180 which then allowed Demoforce to cut and lift down with a mobile crane the remaining sections of the bridge in 5 tonne section and processed on the floor ready for removal. The last section was to demolish the section of bridge adjacent to the Network rail main line with the High reach excavator. Working closely alongside our client the BAPA agreement had to be agreed prior to the last section getting demolished.
