Statom Group has recently completed two riverwall replacement schemes at Leven Road in East London and Wandsworth Mills in South West London. Both projects involved complex civil and structural engineering works delivered within live, operational environments.
These projects were both undertaken as part of wider regeneration schemes, each involving the replacement of ageing or unstable river walls along vital London waterways: the River Lea and the River Wandle. Both structures formed key early-stage elements of the overall development, enabling safe progression of follow-on construction.
Both projects involved the installation of a new sheet piled wall immediately behind the existing, with a new capping beam and raised flood defence. Complex temporary works were used to ensure that the works could be completed from the land. Once the main defence was installed, both existing walls could be demolished without compromising flood defences.The Wandsworth River wall saw the use of a 120m long cofferdam to enable RC terracing and inter-tidal planting to be installed, whereas the wall on the River Lea was completed within tidal conditions.This approach allowed each programme to progress efficiently and safely, while ensuring no compromise to flood protection throughout the works.
