Statom Group Celebrates Completion of RC Structure Within Historic Gasholder At Oval Village

16.05.2025

Statom Group proudly partnered with clients Berkeley Homes to host a celebratory event to mark the completion of Block C at Oval Village, located within the preserved frame of a historic Victorian gas holder, overlooking the iconic Kia Oval Cricket Ground in South London. The event brought the Statom team together alongside project teams, stakeholders, and collaborators to recognise this major milestone in the regeneration scheme. Speeches, refreshments, and a guided site walk took place, highlighting the exceptional work delivered across all phases.

Guests gathered at the peak of the distinctive steel structure, where they were able to witness firsthand the blending of heritage and innovation that defines the project. This event also doubled as the Lord’s Taverners’ 75th anniversary celebration — a UK-based charity that uses the power of sport and recreation to help young people from disadvantaged backgrounds and those with disabilities.

The Oval development features a combination of private and affordable housing, designed as stepped terraces that follow the geometry of the retained gas holder, creating a unique and visually striking residential environment. In March, Statom completed the reinforced concrete (RC) frame within the gas holder — a structure which now links to Phase 1 and Phase 2, both successfully completed by Statom in earlier stages.

“We at Statom are delighted to have been engaged by the Berkeley team in Oval to deliver this latest phase in this prestigious development, it’s testament to all involved that this development has been constructed successfully and collaboratively. Despite its intricacies we have delivered this project safely, to a high quality and ahead of programme. We would like to thank all involved in the successful completion of this stage of the build.”

- Paul Whelan, Managing Director

Engineering precision has allowed the new frame to respect and complement the existing Victorian steelwork, preserving the site’s character while meeting modern structural standards. In addition, specialist work included casting sloped RC walls to enable the installation of Halo steel brackets for future maintenance access, ensuring long-term viability without compromising the architectural vision.

The event not only celebrated the physical progress made on site but also acknowledged the collaborative effort, spectacular planning, and skilled execution that has brought the project to this point. Block C now stands completed, with upstands and overruns scheduled as the next steps.
